Nightlife

Now that you know how to get around, let’s explore a few places to go.  The biggest city is Seoul.  This densely populated area is one of the busiest cities in the world.  It has all kinds of things to do.  If you are working is Seoul, you will obviously have a lot of chances to tour the city.  Even if you are not living there, you will likely find yourself making a few visits.

Seoul offers a lot of nightlife.  If you are interested in mingling with a lot of foreigners, you can head to either Itaewon (이태원) or Hongdae.  These are the two most popular places for foreigners.  Itaewon has many bars to choose from, whether you want to dance, sit, play pool, listen to live music, or eat.  The main downfall of the Itaewon area is its proximity to the Yongsan army base.  There are many American soldiers stationed there, and the less mature ones can sometimes take away from an otherwise enjoyable atmosphere.  There is also an area referred to as “Hooker Hill”, which we will let you gather for yourself what goes on there.  Other than a few downfalls, there can be a fun time to be had when in Itaewon.  It is also a very popular place for shopping during the day.  If there are certain things that you find difficult to get as a foreigner, you will likely find them somewhere in Itaewon.

Hongdae (홍대) is a university area, and as such caters to a young, hip crowd.  Again, there are many places to choose from, and the music tends to be a little more progressive.

Hongdae also has a “Club Day” once a month, and for one fee, you can go to all of the venues.  This is very popular, and there are large crowds that gather.

The Kangnam Station (강남역) area is a fun place to go.  This area has much less foreigner presence than Itaewon or Hongdae.  It is one of the most popular nightspots for Koreans.  There are many drinking establishments, singing rooms, restaurants, and shopping opportunities available.

Apkujeong (압구정) is known as the area for wealthier people.  There are some more upscale places, and prices reflect that.  It is certainly affordable and accessible for teachers.  However, it seems to quiet down earlier in the evening than other places.  There is also lots of shopping, and if you are looking to spend some money, that’s the place to go.  They have their own version of Rodeo Drive where you can shop at big name shops such as Calvin Klein, Gucci, Prada, Armani, and other name brands.
